I had to go look this up because I couldn’t believe it wasn’t a “news from a brighter timeline,” type thing, but it’s almost entirely true. NASCAR didn’t actually fire him cuz that’s not really how that works, but they suspended him indefinitely when it happened. His company did also fire him, tho.

He was allowed to return to racing after 6 months of voluntary education on race and language, which I’m not sure how I feel about. He did do it himself, and his multiple apologies acknowledge not just that it’s not a word for him to use, but why it can’t be, both of which are all but unheard of whenever someone ends up controversial because they used a slur. Positive signs, but I’m still wary.

Everything else holds up well. They banned the Confederate flag, and have added it to the list of banned items alongside things like fireworks and weapons. If someone sneaks one in, NASCAR reserves the right to not only kick people out, but to fucking have them arrested if they refuse to take it down and/or leave. In conjunction with the ban, Bubba Wallace, the black driver mentioned, created a BLM-styled stock car and drove it in a 500 lap race.

The ban on gun ads isn’t entirely accurate from what I’ve seen, but they haven’t allowed sponsorships or ads featuring assault weapons or sniper rifles since late 2019. They haven’t explicitly banned all gun ads, but they haven’t allowed any that feature the kinds of weapons used in most mass shootings, which are the ones most heavily advertised (fucking shocker, I know).

Finally, like many companies, NASCAR is displaying the pride flag at its racetracks, but it actually went a step further this year. It held an auction for signed gear from several drivers, and the proceeds were given to You Can Play, an organization dedicated to breaking down walls for lgbtq+ athletes.

TLDR: There’s a couple slight inaccuracies and 2 caveats, but by and large the stuff in the original tweet is true. Go NASCAR, apparently
